Status of land
All the land is privately owned and has been hunted on for nine years

Rainfall and Temperature:
Hunting is mainly done from March to October, which tends to be cool and dry. Daytime temperatures will vary. Generally speaking a warm jacket would be needed at night. However, during the day temperatures can reach 26°C. The summer rains start in late October and end early February.

Previous land use
Prior to hunting the land was used for cattle ranching.

There are no inhabitants on the land used.

Size and location of the hunting areas
In the Limpopo province Nkonka operates on 30 000 hectares and all the properties are within 45 minutes drive. If required to travel to the concessions, it is a 6-hour drive to the Free State or KZN areas.

Nkonka offers the ‘Big Five’ and all the southern African plains game. There is no limited quota, so refer to the Nkonka Safari website to see what is on offer. End-of-season discount hunts are also offered and the minimum hunt is seven days. They do also introduce game to improve the gene pool.

Accommodation facilities
Lodge is a purpose-built luxury lodge. The lounge, bar and dining room are separate from the accommodation. All the buildings and chalets are brick with thatched roofs. All have en suite bathrooms, flush toilets, hot and cold water, constant electricity and are fully air-conditioned. If there is a power failure they have a back-up generator. There is also a swimming pool, a boma, satellite TV, landline telephone, as well as mobile phone and free Wi-Fi coverage. A maximum of eight hunters can be accommodated at any one time.

From the Lodge
The distance to the closest tar road is just 1km. No vehicle lights can be seen though sometimes vehicles can be heard. The nearest international airport is O R Tambo in Johannesburg, two-and-a-half hours away by vehicle. However, the closest airfield is Nylstroom/Modimole which is a VFR, tarmac 1200 metre, all-weather runway approved by the Civil Aviation Authority. There is also a private 1200m dirt air strip (which is due to be upgraded to all-weather tarmac) at Vaalwater which is half-an-hour drive from Nkonka. The closest doctor is also in Vaalwater.

All meals are inclusive in the price and all dinners are BBQ/Braai with starters and pudding. Full English breakfast as well as lunch is included, and typically the animals shot provide the meat. All drinks and alcohol are included in the daily rate.

Five full-time trackers are employed who have been working for Nkonka for over nine years. They also have skinners and a full complement of lodge staff.

Trophies are skinned, salted and stored in separate sheds made of brick, hence are very secure and 100% vermin proof. These facilities are well ventilated and have electric lighting. The trophies once dried are stored separately and tags are used for identification. There is also an abattoir with cold room. All the skinners have at least 10 years experience and Bulls Eye and Zingela Taxidermy are recommended. However, trophies can be shipped to the client’s own taxidermist of choice.
